The small island quite small, measuring only 13 km by 15 km was discovered by Capt. James Cook some two centuries ago on his second voyage to New Zealand. Transfixed by the huge pine trees and crystal clear waters, he named it ‘Isla des Pins’ or the Island of the Pines.
