Vacation time is often regarded as a time to relax, enjoy the scenery and have fun. However, more and more people are finding that parting from their electronics that they have grown so attached to is more challenging than they believed. It’s not uncommon in today’s world to find people at the Beach or amusement park using their phones, computers and other “necessities.” CNN investigated the topic further and they went down south from Ohio with Steve Daly and his family where they stopped for “the world’s best ice cream.”
After they finished up their order, CNN noticed Steve took a quick break to check his email on his phone. Everyone in his family says they constantly bug him about his “email checking habits” but when Daly was questioned about it, he suggested it’s normal and it helps him enjoy his vacation even further.Daly is 39-years-old and he commented that “The anxiety is just not knowing – so being able to check the inbox to see what’s going on, if anything, is what allows me to relax.”
Daly is not the only one who feels this way about their vacations. There are millions of people who can’t unplug their phones, computers and other devices when they are on vacation. In fact, being on their devices has become normal and they’re unable to part from the addiction. Smartphones have implemented a way to check email, send emails and even browse the web while on the go and it’s just too easy to not stray from the habit when you’re on a vacation.
Brian Uzzi, a professor from the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management says “You keep business on you, so to speak, when you’re trying to keep on top of everything else in your life.” Work and personal ties have never been so easy to connect and keep available as they are today.
